Southport 1-0 AFC Liverpool Report By Matty Hurst

Southport surpass AFC Liverpool to progress into the semi- finals of the Liverpool Senior Cup in a game which proved a real test for the home side.

Southport dictated the play and held possession well in the first 20 minutes seeing them have  a flurry of corners but the golden chance to take the lead came in the 26th minute where a long throw by Oliver by-passed everyone in the box and reached Watson at the back post but he couldn’t get full contact on the ball seeing his effort slice up and into the keepers hands.

As the first half came to a close it was still the home side pushing forward but making no real chances that would threaten the rather untroubled McGovern in goal. Port started the second half in the same vain after the first 15 minutes saw very few efforts on goal made allowing the visitors to have a few pot-shots from distance which McMillan dealt with comfortably.

A chance came once again to take the lead for Port in the 75th minute when substitute Archer was played through on goal but his first touch was too heavy allowing McGovern to close down the forward and take away the danger.

The break finally came after 88 minutes of football following a Munro corner, all Chris Doyle had to do was head it back across goal after being left unmarked at the back post giving Southport the lead which they held until the end.

Seeing a game that provided Port with a challenge prevail with the win regardless, allowing progression into the semis whereas attention now will switch back to the league with an away game at Buxton on Saturday.
