Southport 3 Scunthorpe United 2
Southport stunned the league leaders at Haig Avenue this after twice coming from behind to run out 3-2 winners. A win that looked highly unlikely after the opening 40 minutes when Scunthorpe were the dominant side and the home side didn’t look like scoring.
The visitors took the lead in the 37th minute through a superb Callum Roberts free kick which gave Chris Renshaw in the Southport goal no chance.
The equaliser came through a bad Scunthorpe mistake when a Will Evans back pass fell woefully short and Danny Lloyd latched on to it but still had work to do before firing home.
1-1 at half time and given the posession Scunthorpe had dominated, Southport were grateful to go in all square at the break.
It didn’t take long for the vistors to regain the lead when Danny Whitehall was on had to head home from close range in the 55th minute.
There then followed a crazy few minutes when first Sonny Hilton scored in the 59th minute and 90 seconds later Lloyd was on hand to finish superbly to make it 3-2.
Marcus Carver who was superb all afternoon went close to making it 4-2 firing just wide late on.
Scunthorpe were trying desperately to grab an equaliser and the groans that went up from the home fans when the 7 minutes of added time went up were loud but urged on by some great home support Southport were able to see the game out fairly comforatbly in the end.
