Southport 5 Hereford 1

You have to go back to January 2019 to find the last time Southport had a 5-1 home win (against Leamington) and that is how the game ended this afternoon.

It could have all been very different but for a string of first class saves by debutant George Pickford in the Southport goal in the first half when the scoreline could easily have been 0-4. Somehow despite the Hereford dominance in that first period Southport found themselves 2-0 up at the break with goals from Chris Sze on 32 minutes (reported by some organisations as Malakai McKenzie) and on the stroke of half time Jordan Slew punished some slack defending to make it 2-0.

It was a different story in the second half with Southport dominant against a dispirited Hereford side and three further goals from McKenzie in the 50th minute, Sze with his second on 54 minutes and Slew got his second on 71 minutes.

Several chances came and went as Southport went in search of the first ever Non League 6-0 league win but it was not to be and it was Hereford who did pull a goal back in the 84th minute from the penalty spot.

A vital three points on the board that lifts The Sandgrounders up to 18th place ahead of another home game against Buxton on Tuesday. Kick Off 7.45pm
