Three teams at Southport and Ormskirk hospitals have been shortlisted in this year’s Nursing Times awards.

The critical care unit is shortlisted in the emergency and critical care category for designing personalised memory boxes at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. The memory boxes delivered to families included handprints, heart traces and locks of hair.

The same team won the category in 2020 for creating a virtual video tour of the department to help families understand where their relative was receiving care.

In the cancer nursing category, the acute oncology team is shortlisted for helping to develop and implement a diagnosis and treatment pathway for patients suspected of having metastatic spinal cord compression. The SPINE mnemonic recognises the condition early to treat and prevent long-term spinal cord damage.

Since it was introduced, audits have shown the care for this group of patients has improved. The idea has since been adopted by the Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance and has received recognition from the UK Acute Oncology Society.

Dementia and Delirium Team
The dementia and delirium team are nominated for managing long-term conditions for their work in supporting the delivery of tailored pathways for patients and their families living with dementia.

The Trust is just one of 23 hospitals across the UK to have admiral nurses and has trained 200 members of staff as dementia champions.

Lynne Barnes Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Therapies said: “It is wonderful to see three of our teams recognised for their incredible efforts after a very challenging two years.

“Our nursing staff go above and beyond, and these nominations illustrate the tailored care provided daily to meet the needs of our patients and their families.”

Acute Oncology Team
Kerry Lyons, Admiral Nurse for Dementia UK who nominated the dementia and delirium team said: “We are truly delighted that the Admiral Nurse service at Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust, has been shortlisted for the 2022 Nursing Times Awards.

“The shortlist recognises their commitment to ensuring continuous improvement of quality, and positive experience of care, for families affected by dementia.”

The awards ceremony will take place in London on 26 October 2022.
