Southport beach car park will be open for the Air Show despite being closed all summer
Despite being closed for parking for the majority of the summer preparations are being made to open up the Southport beach car park. Many excuses from the Council over the summer months included the beach being too wet or covered in mud and a lack of staff.
Today the Council is preparing the beach ready to open up for the weekend's Air Show. It will be accessible from the north side of the Pier.
The Council has been approached for comment as to why the beach has been closed all summer but will now be opened up at the weekend.
And here it is ...
A spokesperson for Sefton Council said: "This year has seen a surprisingly large number of excessively high tides on Southport beach.
"On 38 occasions these tides have reached nearly 30 feet in height, which automatically triggers an instant closure on the grounds of public safety.
"Following these high tides ground conditions are extremely poor and the vast majority of vehicles would become stuck if they attempted to drive on the beach.
"Other factors, including limited seasonable staff availability and high levels of pedestrianised traffic on the beach, also have impacted on the number of times we have been able to safely operate a Southport beach car park.
"During the Air Show weekend the beach is temporarily managed by Sefton Council's Tourism team who bring in additional resource to safely manage beach traffic."
