Southport Councillors Express Concern Over Budget and EU Ties
Budget fails to deliver on important issues – Southport Lib Dems
1st November 2024 The Labour Government’s first Budget has failed to deliver on social care and ignored the importance of closer ties with the EU to facilitate economic growth.
Mike Sammon, Councillor for Cambridge Ward is also concerned that without a strong relationship with the EU, the growth that the Chancellor has promised won’t materialise. He commented: “The Budget has handed a lot of extra tax to businesses on the promise that we will see strong growth. It’s unclear how this investment and growth will materialise without a plan for a strong relationship with Europe.
Meols ward Councillor Gareth Lloyd-Johnson said: “It’s welcome that the carers allowance has been increased but there was silence on the fundamentals of making the social care system work better. Day in and day out we talk to local residents who are being failed by our creaking social care system.
“Properly funding social care will help ease the immense pressure that the NHS is under.”
