Southport Councillors Show Support for Prime Minister’s Stance on Speed Limits and ULEZ Schemes

Dukes Ward Councillors, Mike Prendergast and Sir Ron Watson have welcomed the definitive statement by the Prime Minister particularly in respect of 20 mph limits and ULEZ schemes in general.

Councillor Prendergast said, “We recently benefitted considerably from a sum of nearly £700,000 that the Government has made available for pothole repairs and this remains a priority for all Sefton residents.

The introduction of 20 mph limits on a broad basis throughout the Town costs something like £500,000 which is a significant sum of money but enquiries made of the Police have shown that they have no resources available to implement these restrictions and it is clear that they are being widely ignored.”

Councillor Sir Ron Watson added “the general policy approach to car usage is beginning to shift more towards the motorist and so many of our residents rely heavily on their cars on a day to day basis for a great variety of reasons.

The money that was spent on highly controversial and seemingly ineffective cycle lanes proves the point and at the very least these programmes should be seriously reviewed and the savings made transferred to repairs of pavements and pot holes.

The acute problems that are being caused on Hoghton Street to virtually every part of our community with the arbitrary introduction of cycle lanes needs to be reversed and the restrictions lifted as free flowing traffic really is critical to the wellbeing of so many people.”
