Sefton Council’s Southport Crematorium has been praised for the “excellent” service it provides.

A recent inspection of Southport Crematorium by the Federation of Burial and Crematorium Authority (FBCA) noted that no recommendations were necessary.

Judging across six areas, the FBCA awarded the crematorium with an overall score of 97.2%, putting it above the industry average. The report praised the staff and ceremony facilities, highlighting the alternative forms of services that are encouraged.

Key areas that were inspected included the crematorium’s grounds, services and the facilities within the premises. The areas covered reflect the process of cremation, from the initial administration to the ceremony and ending with memorialisation.

Southport Crematorium was also scored above average in an environmental awareness inspection, which took place at the same time.

Councillor John Fairclough, Cabinet member for Locality Services said:

“This is a fantastic achievement, well done to all the staff at Southport Crematorium for their hard-work and dedication.

“It is never easy when we lose a loved one and I know that the care and professionalism that the team provide is valued when people do need to use our facility.

“I am delighted to hear that Southport Crematorium has scored above industry standard in both their compliance and environmental inspections.

”The praise is even more impressive considering the impact COVID-19 has had on the crematorium and services over the past couple of years.”

The FBCA inspects crematoriums every three to five years to ensure that high standards of service delivery to local communities is maintained.
