The Sandgrounders end the season with a flourish after a professional performance sees them overcome a determined Kidderminster Harriers side 2-1. Two goals from Tom Moore and Danny Philliskirk cut promotion celebrations short and condemn Kidderminster to the play offs.
The away side started the game tentatively and struggled to test Renshaw in the opening half an hour. Instead it was Southport asking all the questions, and the home side broke the deadlock on the 33rdminute via a Tom Moore tap in following a frantic scramble inside the Kidderminster box.
It wasn’t until the second half where the opposition’s title hopes were damaged beyond repair, a first-time Philliskirk rocket nestled into the bottom corner 20 seconds after the restart, leaving goalkeeper Chris Dibble with no chance.
Kidderminster did provide a fightback, and pulled one back just before the hour mark after Reiss McNally poked home from close range.
But for all their endeavour, Kidderminster couldn’t get past a resolute Southport defence. Defenders Nathaniel Knight-Percival and Keenan Quansah performed excellently to maintain the home side’s lead.
As the clocked ticked into its 90thminute, only one team looked like scoring. A late counter attacking opportunity gave Danny Lloyd the potential to restore a two-goal cushion, but the top scorer couldn’t find the net one final time for the season.
