Southport Lib Dems Seek Younger and More Diverse Councillors
The latest data shows that the average age of a Councillor in England is 60. Nearly half (42%) are over 65 and only 16% are under 45. Southport Lib Dems want to ensure that a representative range of people from across the town Councillors for their party to help them achieve their vision for Southport’s future, which includes tackling the below issues.
·Boosting Southport’s reputation as a seaside resort Making sure our town is playing to its strengths. Re-opening our pier and making sure we offer the right attractions is a crucial part of our town’s economy and identity as a seaside town.
·Better transport links Improving the speed and regularity of the Manchester train connection and re-opening the train link to Preston would open up our town’s economy.
·Investment into local business championing and boosting investment into our town centre. Holding the Council to account to get the best deal for Southport.
·A fair deal for residents helping to protect residents from the cost of living crisis and holding the Labour run government to account via the Labour run Council
Lib Dem Council leader, John Pugh, said: “Do you have an interest in Southport’s future? Do you want to see a thriving town centre with job opportunities and great transport links?
“Local politics has an unfair reputation for being a bit dull or just about potholes. The reality couldn’t be further from the truth. Being a local Councillor means you are an advocate for local people on a range of issues including health, education and access to services. It also gives you a unique opportunity to play a part in shaping the future of your area.
“With the majority of Councillors being over 60 it’s clear that all parties have a responsibility to find and select candidates that represent a cross-section of society. We are proud that in our local Council and activist group we have a good spread of age, experience and skills and we want more people to consider joining us.
“If you agree with what we stand for, come and join our cause.”
