Southport Lifeboat Crew to hold a minutes silence to remember the lost lives of the Mexico disaster
We remember the brave men of Southport and St Anne’s lifeboats who lost their lives on the late evening of 9th/early morning of 10th December 1886.
Crews from Southport, St. Anne’s and Lytham launched to the aid of the German Barque, Mexico, which had got into difficulty off the shores of Birkdale during a violent storm.
The lifeboats from Southport and St. Anne’s capsized, which resulted in the terrible loss of all the 13 St. Anne’s crew and all but two of the 16 Southport Crew. Lytham Lifeboat managed to rescue the crew of Mexico and return them to shore.
This evening (Saturday 10th) some of our crew will meet at the Fishermen's Rest for a minute silence and the reading of a poem to remember those brave men who lost their lives in what remains the worst lifeboat disaster in British History.
The Fishermans Rest, which was the coach house for the Palace Hotel at the time of the disaster, takes it's name as it was used as a temporary mortuary for the crew of the Southport Lifeboat.
