Southport MP Advocates for More Local Transport Infrastructure Investment

Damien Moore MP welcomes the beginning of the Conservative Government’s Network North plan, which will invest £1 billion of HS2 savings to deliver long-term improvements to bus services across the Midlands and the North.

£150 million of this funding is being invested now with Liverpool City Region Combined Authority receiving £8,825,000 for 2024-25. The £2 bus fare cap has also been extended across England until 31 December 2024 – bringing total investment in the cap to £600 million.

This announcement is only possible due to the long-term decision the Conservative Government have taken to redirect every penny of savings from HS2 in transport projects across the country – benefitting more people in more places, more quickly.

Local Member of Parliament Damien Moore MP welcomes £150 million investment into bus services across Southport, thanks to savings from HS2. 


Southport will receive a share of the £150 million – the first part of a £1 billion investment into bus services from Network North – using savings from HS2 to improve more journeys for more people. Liverpool City Region Combined Authority will receive £8,825,000 from the funding pot. 


While it is up to local authorities in partnership with operators to decide how best to use the funding, the new funding for next year is enough to support up to 25 million miles of new bus services across the North and Midlands, helping local authorities provide more regular and reliable services or cheaper fares delivered through fare initiatives and ticket price caps.


This funding comes on top of the Conservative Government’s unprecedented investment of over £3.5 billion for the bus sector since March 2020 to support its recovery from the pandemic, drive improvements to local bus services and encourage more use of buses.


The Conservative Government have also announced the £2 bus fare cap is extended across the country from next week until 31 December 2024.

Taking the bus is the most popular form of public transport, which is why the Government is correct in its decision to reinvest every penny of savings from HS2 into local transportation across the Southport Constituency.


The £8,825,000 reinvested funding for Liverpool City Region Combined Authority will have a transformational effect on people across Southport, improving local services and connectivity while making them cheaper and more affordable.


Despite the considerable investment already being made into improving transport connectivity across Southport and the greater North West, including the announced £8,825,000 investment in local service connectivity and capacity expansion. And the maintenance of the £2 pound fare cap. I’m calling on the Government to go further. 


To truly upgrade our local transport infrastructure, reconnect our communities, and grow our tourist and leisure economy, we need direct investment into our Burscough Curves and Green Lane Link, levelling up Southport’s Road and rail services for our communities while cementing Southport as the premier leisure and travel hub for our local communities and tourists.
