Southport MP meets with Children's minister over his concerns to place asylum seeking family's at Pontins

MP Damien Moore

Damien Moore, MP for Southport, said:

“Yesterday, I met with the Children’s Minister, Claire Coutinho MP, to make clear my opposition to
any proposal to house asylum seekers in Pontins. This followed my question on Monday in Parliament
to the Immigration Minister, where I pointed out that vulnerable asylum-seeking children should not
be sent to local authorities whose children’s services are rated “inadequate” by Ofsted

“Sefton’s children’s services are already failing our town’s young people, and the additional impact
that asylum seekers would have could result in a total breakdown. I will not stand by and watch as
Southport’s children suffer, and I will do everything I can to protect them.

“The Children’s Minister made clear that she understands my concerns, and I look forward to further
communication between the Department for Education, the Home Office, and Sefton Council, as we
work to protect Southport’s children.”
