Southport MP offers advice to residents during storm Eunice

With Storm Eunice currently in full force in Southport, I wanted to provide constituents with some key information to assist with reporting any issues which arise.

Firstly, I would encourage everybody to try and stay home where possible. We have incredibly strong winds in Southport at the moment, and we have seen collapsed trees, roof tiles falling, and debris flying down roads. The safest place to be is indoors.

Despite Marine Drive having now re-opened, I would continue to urge residents to avoid the coastal roads wherever possible.

If you come across flooded areas, please call Floodline on 0345 988 1188, or 999 in an emergency. Please do not drive through flood water, as just 30cm of flowing water is enough to move your car, which is extremely dangerous.

Anyone who spots damaged overhead power lines or other equipment must not approach the area, and should report it immediately by calling 105. This number can also be used to report power outages.

For broadband issues, Openreach advise that you contact your providers directly (Sky, TalkTalk, BT, etc.). They will be best placed to provide you with immediate advice.

If you see a fallen tree, I urge you to report it, as the person on whose house it has fallen, for example, may be unable to report it themselves. These can be reported directly to Sefton Council using the following link:

The Association of British Insurers have outlined that most home insurance, commercial business policies, and comprehensive motor insurance cover damage caused by storms. If you suffer damage to your property, contact your insurer as soon as you can for help and advice.

I would advise that, where possible, items that you normally store loosely outside such as ladders should instead, if possible, be kept indoors, or secured outdoors. Please also consider where the best and most secure place is to keep your household waste and recycling bins.

Most organisations have dedicated contact methods for Members of Parliament to use on behalf of constituents, meaning I can check-up on issues which are brought to me. If you are experiencing difficulty, please do make contact with my office using the details on my website:

At this difficult time, please look out for your neighbours, and when the worst of the storm passes do please check in on those who may be vulnerable.
