Southport MP signs the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment

Damien Moore, MP for Southport, has signed the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment this week. In doing so, Mr. Moore has pledged his commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day and to continuing to honour those who were murdered during a dark scar in human history, while paying tribute to the extraordinary Holocaust survivors who work tirelessly to educate young people today.

This act represents Mr. Moore commitment to ensure that the world’s children, and their children, may know and remember those who lost their lives, their chance to contribute to society, and their ability to tell their own story. In doing so, we guarantee that never again may such a heinous act be allowed to unfold.

On the 27th of January 1945, Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated by allied forces. This year we mark the 77th anniversary of that hopeful day, a day that for thousands marked the end of suffering and torment, with the liberation of concentration camps across occupied Europe.

Today, on Holocaust Memorial Day, thousands of commemorative events will be arranged by schools, faith groups, and community organisations across the country, including a special debate in Parliament, remembering all the victims of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides.

The theme for this year’s commemorations is ‘One Day’, reflecting on the difference that a single day can may make in changing the course of history.

Damien Moore MP said:

Holocaust Memorial Day is an important opportunity for people in Southport, in particular our Jewish community, and across the United Kingdom to reflect on the darkest times of European history.

“In previous years, I have been honoured to speak at Christ Church on Lord Street to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust, and it is heartening to see our community across Southport rally round each year at this important time.”

“As the Holocaust moves from living memory to history, it becomes ever more vital that we take the time to remember the six million Jewish men, women, and children who lost their lives, while also paying tribute to the survivors.

“For this reason, every year I sign the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment as Southport’s MP, to express our town’s commitment to remembering, commemorating, and honouring”

Karen Pollock CBE, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said:

As the Holocaust fades from living memory, it falls on all of us to ensure that their stories and the stories of the six Jewish million men, women, and children brutally murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators are never forgotten.

“We all have a duty to remember the Holocaust and to stand up against antisemitism and hate, now more than ever.”
