Southport Seal Win with 2-0 Victory as Fans Brave Cold
On a bitterly cold night Southport warmed the supporters up with a 2-0 win in front of the season’s lowest gate of the season.
A double from the sponsors Man Of The Match Richie Bennett with goals in the 17th and 88th minutes was enough to bring the home side maximum points.
The first goal came after great work down the flanks from Jack Doyle and Luke Burgess saw the ball fall to Marcus Carver whose fierce cross shot found Bennett. His first attempt hit the bar but he reacted quickly to prod the ball home from close range.
Southport created a number of chances to increase the lead in the first half
We did have a lucky escape in the 57th minute after an almighty scranble in the six yard box was eventually cleared.
The decisive goal came when Fin Heath on as a sub struck a free kick from all of 30 yards against the post and Bennett was on hand to tap home the rebound.
