Southport thrashed 4-0 at Alfreton
Southport’s poor record at Alfreton continued as three first half goals for the home side put Southport on the back foot and they never recovered.
A 3-0 half time scoreline flattered the home side as for the first 30 minutes the visitors were playing some nice football but once the first goal went in the final 15 minutes of the half belonged to the home side.
Jordan Archer went closest with a header over the bar on 15 minutes and with Tyler Walton looking dangerous out wide but unable to penetrate a resolute home rearguard there was no sign of what was to follow.
The first goal was a goalkeeping error by the usually reliable Cam Mason but the second from Dayle Southwell was a brilliant shot on the volley from the edge of the area that nobody could have saved.
2-0 up after 40 minutes and the home side effectively put the game to bed in added time when the Southport defence fell asleep and left Fraser Preston the easiest of chances to head home from close range.
Southport were playing down the pronounced slope in the second half and the feeling at half time was if they could grab an early goal they could still be in the game but it wasn’t to be in a poor second half performance from the visitors.
It was the home side who added a fourth goal in the 66th minute with Southwell adding his second slotting home from close range.
A disappointing afternoon on the road.
