Southport v Altrincham Preview
It’s FA Cup action once again for The Sandgrounders on Saturday when high flying Vanarama National side Altrincham come to town.
Altrincham come to Southport sitting in 7th place and on the back of a long trip to Somerset for what sounded like a lively encounter with former ‘Port goalkeeper Tony Thompson taken off injured early in the first half and outfield player Connor Hampson taking over between the sticks. The game ended 1-1 with Hampson making a series of fine saves
Altrincham have recalled Matty Gould from a loan spell at Nantwich as a precaution against Thompson not being fit and unable to start.
Southport have defied the odds twice already this season with excellent replay wins against Chorley and Spennymoor and will need to be on top form once again to beat the in form Robins.
We played each other in the FA Cup in 2019-20 with Altrincham coming out on top in a 3-1 win. Earlier the same season Southport had recorded a 2-1 win. That was before Altrincham hit form and went on to win promotion in the same season.
Apart from Thompson other Southport connections include Neil Sorvel, Brad Jackson, Andy White, Steven Drench and David Fitzpatrick.
Altrincham have certainly had their ups and downs in the last 10 years but come to The Pure Stadium on a real high.
