Southport 24 Hour Race starts in blustery conditions
The West Lancashire Yacht Club 24 Hour Race started at noon on Saturday, September 12, with sailors setting off in blustery conditions on Southport Marine Lake.
The endurance dinghy race will continue non-stop until noon on Sunday, September 13. Crews will take turns on the water through the night before the finish.
Commonly known as the Southport 24 Hour Race, the event is hosted by West Lancashire Yacht Club at its Marine Drive venue. The club describes it as one of the largest competitive gatherings of dinghy sailors in the UK, with teams travelling from clubs across the country.
The 2026 event is listed as featuring around 850 sailors competing over 24 hours. Teams race a range of dinghies, including GP14s, Fireflies and Enterprises, in a test of endurance, teamwork and boat-handling.
Racing is due to finish at noon on Sunday.
