Southport beat Bedford Town 4-1 to claim first win of the season
Southport earned their first three points of the 2026-27 National League North season with a 4-1 win over Bedford Town at Haig Avenue on Saturday, August 22.
Luke Burgess scored twice in the opening 27 minutes after being named captain for the afternoon. His first goal, in the sixth minute, was Southport’s 4,000th in non-league football across all competitions since the club entered the non-league game in 1978.
Burgess, who joined Southport in October 2023, was later named sponsors’ man of the match. He also spoke after the game about his pride at captaining the side.
Southport’s first three goals followed errors in the Bedford defence, although the visitors pulled one back shortly before half-time. Jordan Slew restored Southport’s two-goal advantage in the 73rd minute after coming on as a substitute.
Teddy Lavelle completed the scoring in the 87th minute with a fine finish. There was no late Bedford comeback, and the result sent the home crowd home happy.
The attendance was 1,250.
