Southport held to 2-2 draw after Spennymoor’s late penalty
Southport were held to a 2-2 draw by Spennymoor Town at Haig Avenue after the visitors scored a stoppage-time penalty to complete their comeback.
The Sandgrounders looked on course for a comfortable win after taking a 2-0 lead into half-time.
Malakai McKenzie opened the scoring in the 19th minute, racing clear from his own half before rounding Spennymoor goalkeeper Matt Urwin and finishing into the empty net.
Southport doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time when Adam Moseley reacted quickly after a fortunate bounce in the area, went around Urwin and scored.
Southport started the second half brightly and had chances to extend their lead. Jordan Slew missed an opportunity after rounding the goalkeeper, while Urwin also made important saves to keep Spennymoor in the match.
The visitors gradually came back into the game. Glen Taylor reduced the deficit in the 74th minute with a powerful finish that went in off the post.
Southport appeared set to hold on, but Spennymoor were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time. Taylor sent Lukjanciks the wrong way from the spot to make it 2-2.
The draw was watched by 1,638 people at Haig Avenue. Jordan Slew was named Southport’s sponsors’ man of the match.
