Striking Teachers protest outside The Atkinson in Southport
Teachers in Southport and the rest of the Country are striking today in a dispute over pay. Tuesday’s strike is the latest in a series of walkouts teachers, with previous action taking place throughout February, March and April.
Tens of thousands of teachers who are members of the National Education Union (NEU) walked out last Thursday, forcing many schools to shut or limit classes.
A similar level of disruption is expected today as teachers at schools and sixth-form colleges step out of the classroom and onto the picket line.
Teachers are locked in a long-running pay row with the Government. They have overwhelmingly rejected the offer of a £1,000 one-off payment for the current school year (2022/23) and an average 4.5 per cent pay rise for staff next year.
