Tens of thousands of racegoers enjoy Ladies Day at Grand National Festival 2023

Merseyside Police would like to thank racegoers for a safe and successful Ladies Day at Aintree racecourse on Friday 14 April.

Over 44,000 people attended the racecourse today despite the afternoon showers. The vast majority of racegoers conducted themselves in an impeccable manner. A 26-year-old man from Kirkdale was taken to custody after he was arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance.

Superintendent Matthew Moscrop said: “Thousands of people are visiting Aintree this weekend and I would like to thank the racegoers who enjoyed themselves without causing any disruptions.

“We have an increased police presence around Aintree racecourse and Aintree Village. I would ask people to continue reporting any concerns and we will take action. 

“Even larger crowds of racegoers attended Aintree to safely enjoy Ladies Day and have a great time this year.

“Our officers have enjoyed engaging with racegoers and it has been very pleasing to see such a great atmosphere and good-natured crowds.

"Tomorrow is the highlight of the three day event – Grand National Day - and I would repeat my advice to racegoers that they should arrive in plenty of time to pass through security and not bring large bags or too many items.

“Please remember to report any incidents you see to our officers who will be inside and outside Aintree and most importantly enjoy this truly special day.”

Earlier this morning a dispersal zone was introduced in Aintree to prevent antisocial behaviour during the festival following previous incidents last year. The dispersal order is now in place from 12pm (midday) today until 4am Sunday 16th April 2023.

The dispersal zone covers the area within the boundaries of: the M57, Dunnings Bridge Road (A5036), Netherton Way, Orrell Lane, Longmoor Lane (A506), Aintree Lane incorporating Aintree Village, back up to Switch Island.

The order gives police officers and police community support traffic officers powers to direct people they suspect are causing or likely to cause crime, nuisance or anti-social behaviour to members of the public to leave a designated area and not return for up to 48 hours. 

Under the legislation, officers have the power to seize any items, including vehicles, used in the commission of anti-social behaviour.
