Maritime Corridor Phase 2 works set to begin on Bridle Road
Phase 2 of Maritime Corridor works are anticipated to start next week. This will take place on Bridle Road, with junction improvements at Bridle Way, Farriers Way, and Vesty Road. The changes will also see the introduction of a new pedestrian and cycle route between Vesty Road to Deltic Way, improving access to the industrial estate and connectivity to Aintree train station for those walking, wheeling or cycling.
The works are anticipated to take around 12 months to complete. The scheme will see improvements on 1.2km of road and 2.4km of footpath, as well as significant improvements for junctions through the introduction of signalised crossings, making those travelling without a car easier. Bridle Road will also see improved footpaths and cycle paths.
Traffic management
Traffic management during the works will temporarily see Bridle Road become one-way from Netherton Way to Park Lane. Traffic coming from Park Lane into Bridle Road towards Netherton Way will not be permitted during the period of the works. Sefton Council commissioned an independent study to establish the least disruptive traffic management option.
The temporary one-way system ensures that works can take place along larger sections of the road. The alternative temporary traffic lights would restrict the length of road that can be worked on, and as a result would have extended the disruption to an estimated 2 years. The temporary one-way system is also predicted to have shorter delays. As the work is completed, sections of the road will be reopened to two-way traffic where it is safe and practical to do so.
Minimise disruption
Sefton Council have worked together with partners to minimise disruption during the scheme. Early works will see collaborative working with utility companies in an aim to reduce the length of disruption.
The 58 bus will be affected in by the temporary one-way traffic management in one direction, from Netherton to Liverpool, and Sefton Council is working with Merseytravel to minimise disruption.Please check the Merseytravel website for updates on the service.
Benefits of the scheme
Cllr Phil Hart, Cabinet Member for Housing and Highways said:
“A journey like Aintree Station to Bootle FC or Atlantic Park will be halved in distance, such as a 15-minute walk from the station becomes closer to 7 minutes. These improvements are about these short journeys becoming nicer and easier to do without a car and encourage people to make the switch. It doesn’t have to be the entire journey either, as we are connecting active travel improvements to public transport.
“Atlantic Park brings plenty of businesses and employment opportunities as well and we are making it more accessible to access for those who don’t drive, which will see benefits for the businesses and those working there.
“This phase of the scheme links in with the first phase on Netherton Way and Dunnings Bridge Road, creating a more joined up cycling infrastructure, helping encourage those less confident on their bike with the improved routes.
