Mersey Tunnels team keeps critical systems operating around the clock
Every day, thousands of journeys are made through the Mersey Tunnels, connecting communities across the Liverpool City Region and supporting the movement of people, goods and services.
While many people are familiar with the tunnels themselves, fewer know about the skilled team working behind the scenes to keep this vital piece of transport infrastructure operating safely and efficiently.
Fromelectricians and fitters to specialist engineers and maintenance technicians, the team is responsible for maintaining and improving the systems that help keep traffic moving through one of the region’s most iconic engineering assets.
What does the Asset Management Team do?
The Mersey Tunnels operate around the clock, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, relying on a wide range of electrical and mechanical systems to support day-to-day operations.
The Asset Management team is responsible for maintaining these critical systems through a combination of planned maintenance, inspections, upgrades and reactive repairs.
Every week, the team reviews upcoming maintenance priorities, assesses operational requirements and plans work across a variety of assets and infrastructure.
This means no two weeks look the same, with work ranging from preventative maintenance to troubleshooting unexpected issues as they arise.
“One thing I enjoy about the role is that every day brings something different. You never stop learning.”–Alex Gardiner, Graduate Mechanical Engineer
What kind of equipment do Electricians and Fitters work on?
Many people are surprised by the scale and complexity of the infrastructure that supports the tunnels.
The team works on a range of assets that help ensure the tunnels remain safe, reliable and operational, including:
Ventilation Systems
Large-scale ventilation equipment plays a vital role in maintaining air quality throughout the tunnels and requires ongoing inspection, maintenance and improvement.
Generators and Backup Systems
Resilience is critical when operating major transport infrastructure. Engineers regularly work on generators and backup systems designed to support tunnel operations.
Electrical Infrastructure
Electricians work across a variety of systems, carrying out inspections, testing and maintenance activities that help keep operations running smoothly.
Mechanical Equipment
Fitters maintain and repair mechanical assets, ensuring equipment remains safe, reliable and ready to perform when needed.
Together, these systems form part of a highly complex engineering environment that supports one of Liverpool City Region’s most important transport links.
What skills does the team bring?
The team is made up of people from a variety of engineering and maintenance backgrounds, bringing different experiences and specialist expertise.
While technical knowledge is important, many of the skills that underpin the team’s success are transferable across industries.
These include:
Problem solving– diagnosing issues, identifying solutions and responding to operational challenges.
Technical expertise– applying electrical and mechanical knowledge in a live operational environment.
Teamwork– collaborating with colleagues to plan, coordinate and deliver maintenance activities.
Safety awareness– working to high safety standards when maintaining critical infrastructure.
Adaptability– responding to changing priorities and unexpected engineering challenges.
Where do team members come from?
One of the strengths of the team is the variety of career paths that have led people to the Mersey Tunnels.
Many colleagues have experience in areas such as:
Electrical maintenance
Heavy machinery and plant maintenance
Manufacturing and industrial environments
Transport and rail engineering
Utilities and infrastructure
Armed Forces engineering roles
This breadth of experience allows the team to draw on a wide range of knowledge while creating opportunities for people to learn from one another.
“Everybody brings something different to the team. There’s always someone willing to share their knowledge or help you learn something new.”-Harry Nudd, Graduate Mechanical Engineer
Investing in learning and development
Engineering is constantly evolving, and learning and development remains a key focus for the team.
Whether it’s developing specialist technical skills, learning about new equipment or gaining experience across different areas of the operation, colleagues are encouraged to continue building their knowledge throughout their careers.
This commitment to development helps ensure the team remains equipped to support both current operations and future improvements across the tunnel network.
Supporting the future of the Mersey Tunnels
Alongside maintaining existing infrastructure, the team is also helping support future improvements and upgrades.
As Liverpool City Region works towards its net zero ambitions, the Mersey Tunnels will continue to play an important role in the region’s transport network. The expertise of electricians, fitters and engineers will be central to maintaining, improving and modernising the infrastructure that keeps the city region moving.
For the team responsible for this work, it means being part of an engineering environment that combines rich history with a focus on the future.
The people behind the infrastructure
While the tunnels themselves are a recognisable landmark, it is the people working behind the scenes who keep them operating day after day.
Their skills, experience and commitment help ensure that one of Liverpool City Region’s most important transport assets continues to serve communities across the region, today and for years to come.
