Merseyside Police said emergency services were called shortly before 1.05pm on Tuesday, 11 August, following reports of a one-vehicle collision on the carriageway from Birkenhead towards Liverpool.

The tunnel will remain closed while the incident is dealt with. Motorists are being advised to avoid the route and use an alternative crossing of the River Mersey.

The closure was initially reported on the Birkenhead-to-Liverpool side before being extended to both directions.
