Unanimous Support to Push for Southport's Children's A&E Restoration

Impressive unity prevailed throughout Sefton Council last night at the full Council Meeting as all parties and councillors agreed to lobby health chiefs to restore Children’s A& E to Southport.

The local NHS is currently conducting a consultation on the configuration of Emergency Services in Sefton and West Lancs and is expected to come out with fresh proposals in the new year.

“Unity is crucial,” Liberal Democrat leader Cllr.John Pugh told the council meeting as the parties coalesced round strong wording that he believed reflected the broad democratic will of most residents.

“ Health chiefs need to know where we stand. The issue has not gone away - the  absurdity of a seaside town that denies children and their parents access to the local hospital despite the protests of Southport people. 20 years after the controversial decision was made to close Children’s A& E at Southport the clinical landscape and health service leadership has changed. 24 hour Children’s A&E has ceased at Ormskirk. There is now a window of opportunity to push for a rethink.”

Cllr.Pugh cautioned though that hopes could be dashed. “The NHS isn’t a democracy and as per usual the decision will be made by a Health service quango - in this case the Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care Board.

Health Service Chiefs have proved into past they won't be moved by the public will and there are competing pressures in play. It is important though that the Sefton Council voice is loud and unambiguous and the case for treating children safely in Southport, which can be done in most situations, is firmly made.”

He urged residents to take part in the consulation found here https://www.cheshireandmerseyside.nhs.uk/get-involved/current-consultations-and-engagements/local-nhs-wants-your-views-to-help-shape-urgent-and-emergency-care-services-for-the-future/
