Police are appealing for information after a man sustained a serious head injury following an assault in Waterloo in the early hours of today (Sunday 28 January).

At 12.55am, officers were called to a report the man in his 30s had been punched to the head during an altercation which began inside Parnell’s on South Road and continued outside.

When he was punched, the victim fell to the floor striking his head on the pavement. He was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

The suspect is described as white, in his 60s, with short grey hair, wearing glasses and dressed in dark clothing.

An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances and a forensic examination of the scene has been completed.

Officers have conducted enquiries at neighbouring businesses and are continuing to explore CCTV opportunities in the area.

Detective Inspector Andrew Schofield said: “This was a nasty assault which has left the victim very poorly in hospital, and such violence has no place on the streets of Sefton or anywhere in Merseyside.

“We know South Road is a busy place on a Saturday night and we are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or anyone who recognises the description of the offender.

“If you have any information, however small it may seem, please get in touch. You can DM @MerPolCC on X, call 101 quoting reference 24000124061 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111."
