With Rishi’s coronation, Southport is now there for the taking for Labour

It’s no secret Labour national leaders feared Boris Johnson the most in the next general election, as love or loathe him Boris is a vote-winner, writes Martin Hovden.

Now Tory MPs have handed the job of Prime Minister to millionaire Rishi Sunak, it’s clear Labour is on course to form the next government.

After 12 years of Tory rule, the public have lost confidence in them and want a change.

Southport’s current Conservative MP Damien Moore has a 4,000-plus majority and his days are numbered.

Southport Constituency Labour Party have not yet chosen who they want to be their candidate.

And it could be next spring before they make that choice - unless there’s a snap general election.

But surely after fighting for Labour in the past three general elections (2015, 2017 and 2019), they should pick Liz Savage (pictured).

She and her fellow Labour members fought hard in every election and in 2019 she achieved what was thought impossible five or 10 years ago - she pushed the Liberal Democrats into THIRD place. Southport was once a Lib Dem stronghold. Not any more, they are a spent force.

Thanks to her tireless campaigning, she has made lots of contacts in Southport, including community groups, the health service and the local business community.

That sort of knowledge takes years to achieve and should never be taken lightly. She is also extremely popular and approachable with local residents and ordinary members of Southport Labour Party.

If Liz is selected and wins, she will be Southport’s very first Labour MP in the history of the town.

Southport Labour Party would be foolish to choose someone who doesn’t have her election experience, knowledge and contacts.
