Wonder goal sees Southport progress to the next round of the FA Cup
A wonder goal from the in form Marcus Carver just minutes after he had missed a penalty was the difference between the sides as Southport progress into 3rd Round Qualifying and face an away trip to Spennymoor who beat AFC Fylde in their replay tonight.
A scrappy start to the game burst into life when Jordan Archer was bundled over in the box and the referee had no hesitation in awarding the spot kick. Marcus Carver stepped up but his spot kick was well saved by Urwin in the Chorley goal.
That disappointment didn’t last long as Carver with his back to goal despatched a spectacular overhead kick beyond Urwin to send the ground into raptures. Some were suggesting we cancel the goal of the season already but we hope for more like that to come.
Southport created a few chances to extend the lead but it was Chorley who came closest to scoring when Adam Blakeman hit an excellent free kick against the bar. Blakeman trying to emulate Carver and score against his former club.
Half Time 1-0
Chorley came out with all guns blazing in the second half and put the Southport defence under severe pressure but they stood firm and withstood all that was thrown at them.
Southport had several chances to increase the lead with Archer, Vassallo and substitute Woods all going close to extending the lead whilst at the other end Cameron Mason showed us again what a great ‘keeper he is with one stunning save from a close range header.
It seemed like the second half was going on forever with 4 minutes of added time being shown but that was extended to 6 due to injuries and stoppages but Southport saw the game out and progress into the next round.
Fantastic support once again which the players acknowledged at the end of the game as the team left the field to a well deserved standing ovation.
We are in action again on Saturday when Chorley return to The Pure Stadium for a league fixture with a 3pm Kick Off.
Final Score 1-0
