A poignant photograph to remember a young woman who donated her organs after dying at the age of just 22 in 2020 is now on display at Southport hospital to promote the national organ donation campaign.

Mary-Lou Abbott, who was described by her family as “an inspiration to all who knew her,’’ died suddenly from meningitis, but after joining the donation register at the age of just 16 she went on to help others have a better life.

Speaking at a ceremony to unveil the photograph on the main corridor at the hospital Dr Jim Hammond, the Clinical Lead for Organ Donation at Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said: “I think organ donation is the best thing we have in modern healthcare. There is nothing like it in modern medicine.

“We are improving consent rates but there is still a big need. Only about one in 100 people will be able to donate their organs but we do encourage people to have the conversations like Mary-Lou did, so it makes it clear among family and friends about what we want to happen.

“Mary-Lou was a striking, beautiful young woman and I am sure people will notice her poster and the words, which I think are perfect and will make people reflect.

“I am sure it will help organ donation and help save lives going forward. It’s in the perfect position on the main corridor and will be seen by hundreds of people on a daily basis.’’

Laura Gibney, Specialist Nurse Organ Donation, said: “Organ donation really is the most selfless gift any individual and their loved one’s can give.

“Mary-Lou was 22 years of age and died in January 2020 following a short illness. She had registered on the Organ donor register aged 16 years following the loss of her close friend and it was something she had discussed with her family.

“Through her decision, her kindness and compassion Mary-Lou was able to help others through the gift of organ donation.

“Thank you to her mum Julie, dad Howard, all her extended family and boyfriend for supporting Mary-Lou’s decision at such a difficult time and also for allowing us to share her story here at Southport Hospital.”

Mary Lou’s mum, Julie Bilboe, said: “Mary Lou was always thinking of others, and I am so glad that we had the conversation about organ donation. She made her wishes known at an early age and although I never, ever thought we would have to fulfil those wishes, I am so glad we were clear what she wanted.

“That helped the family a lot as it was one less thing to worry about and it is comforting to know she has helped give others a better life.’’

He dad, Howard Abbott, added: “We hope lots of people see the photo and start their own conversations about organ donation.

“We are all so proud of Mary-Lou.’’
