After being reduced to ten men with goalkeeper Chris Renshaw sent off in the fifth minute it was set to be a backs to the wall afternoon for the travelling Sandgrounders.

Veteran ‘keeper Tony McMillan took his place in goal and at the age of 43 years and 40 days became the oldest player to play a league game for the club in the Non League days overtaking Paul Futcher. The sending off will also spoil Renshaw’s attempt at being ever present.

The first half saw a backs to the wall defensive display but still looking dangerous from set pieces but at 0-0 at half time Sports hadn’t made the breakthrough.

The opening goal came for the home side in the 55th minute through the outstanding Gyasi who slotted home from close range.

However the floodgates never opened and in the 69th minute Peterborough were reduced to ten men after a fracas saw Eliot Putman dismissed for a second yellow card and from the resulting free kick the ball ran loose to Owen Lunt who hit a rasping shot from 30 yards that hit Danny Lloyd’s body and defelected into the goal.

A red card was also shown to a member of the home sides bench.

Either side could have gone on to win it after that with chances at either end.

Southport have been hit with a lot of illness in the squad this last week and Tony Mc was only on the bench by chance due to a lack of numbers.

Overall this must rank as one of the better displays of the season, there were some tired limbs at the end of the game as teh players acknowledged the tremendous travelling support who had made the long journey down from Southport.
