Southport and Alfreton played out a 0-0 draw at Haig Avenue last night, as both sides struggled to create chances against the opposition’s resolute defence.

The first chance of the game fell to the visitors as George Cantrill’s half-volley went narrowly over the bar just before the quarter of an hour mark.

Southport would have the ball in the net twice in the 18th and 22nd minute with efforts from Niall Watson and Tyler Walton respectively, with both being flagged for offside.

The best chance of the game came to the Sandgrounders as Adam Anson’s glancing header in the 26th minute rattled against Alfreton’s crossbar.

The second half failed to produce much in the way of goal threat for either side. Yusufi Ceesay had an attempt blocked and sent wide early in the second period, while Tyler Walton’s header from the edge of the box trickled wide five minutes before the final whistle.

It was Southport’s 500th clean sheet in NL league games.
