Councillor hits out at ‘Liveable Neighbourhood’ scheme proposal to close thirteen roads in Southport
A Southport Consertve Councillor has hit out at proposed plans to close 13 roads in Southport to through traffic.
Councillor Prendergast said, ‘Once again Labour run Sefton Council is looking to impose an unnecessary scheme on our town. Limiting access to roads will just force traffic onto already busy roads like Cemetery Road, Eastbank Street, Duke Street and Scarisbrick New Road and end up creating more air pollution with more standing traffic on these already busy roads.
It is as if some members of the Sefton Labour Party have a desire to plough on with any scheme suggested to them regardless of how unsuitable it is for our town.
It’s also vaguely ridiculous having a charity, Sustrans, in charge of the consultation and the drawing up of proposals. Their only reason for existing is to actively promote these kind of schemes, so the chances of them ever saying it is a bad idea is virtually zero.
Conservative Kew Ward campaigner, Laura Nuttall said, ‘Residents are going to find it harder to get about in their cars and I am concerned that these proposals could have a negative impact on the businesses on Shakespeare Street.
I would urge as many people as possible to make their views known to Sustrans and Sefton Council if we are going to stop this.’
